MISS EMILY'S BLUE BEE BAR
"HOME OF THE GOOMBAY SMASH"

No trip to Green Turtle Cay would be complete without visiting Miss Emily's Blue Bee Bar, home of the Goombay Smash.

The Blue Bee is the oldest bar in Abaco, opening its doors in 1957, and despite its simplicity can be the scene of the liveliest party east of Miami at any time of day.

Miss Emily Cooper concocted the first Goombay Smash at The Blue Bee and versions of her drink can now be order throughout the Islands of the Bahamas and the Caribbean

Miss Emily, who is a legend in the Bahamas is unfortunately no longer with us but Violet Smith, Miss Emily's daughter, knows the recipe for the original Goombay Smash which remains a family secret.

Violet has been serving guests, who have included Jimmy Buffett, Willie Nelson and First Lady Lillian Carter, at The Blue Bee Bar for over 30 years

In September, 2000, Carson WagonlitTravel Postcards Magazine listed the following
"
Top Ten Caribbean Bars"

Miss Emily's Blue Bee Bar (New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas)

Le Select (St. Barts)                           Johnno's Place (Anguilla)
Cheri's Cafe (Saint Maarten)             Uncle Ernie's (Anguilla)
Basil's (Grenadines)                           Foxy's Bar (Jost Van Dyke B.V.I)

JUNKANOO

Every New Year's Day the sound of whistles, goatskin drums, horns and cowbells fill the air of New Plymouth with the rushin' of Junkanoo.

There are several theories on the origin of Junkanoo, which began in the 1700's during the days of slavery.  Many believe that Junkanoo is derived from John Canoe, a plantation owner who allowed his slaves to leave his plantation to join their families in Christmas and New Year celebrations that included African drums, dancing and costumes.

Junkanoo on Green Turtle Cay has always been a very popular annual event and attracts
spectators from across all Abaco.
